Demand for forward-deployed engineers has outpaced supply, and pay reflects it. Here's what FDEs earn, why the role pays a premium, and what it costs to bring one onto a project.
Updated October 2026. We refresh this post quarterly as new data becomes available.
Forward-deployed engineers have become one of the most sought-after roles in AI. Companies building with generative AI and AI agents need engineers who can take a system from demo to production inside a real business, and few people can handle both the engineering and the customer-facing work.
That shortage shows up in pay. Here's what the latest figures say about forward-deployed engineer salary, from job postings, public wage filings, and industry analysis.
What is the base salary for a forward-deployed engineer?
The median base salary for a forward-deployed engineer is about $174,000, before equity, according to Bloomberry's analysis of 1,000 FDE job postings. That figure is based on postings that disclosed salary ranges, and Bloomberry also calls it the average salary for the role.
Equity is a common part of the compensation package: 70% of the postings mentioned it. FDEs are paid like engineers because they’re measured like engineers, on deployment success and the production code they ship. Only 8% of postings mention on-target earnings, and none carry a sales quota.

Why are forward-deployed engineers paid so much?
Demand has grown much faster than supply
Bloomberry found that FDE job postings grew 1,165% from January through October 2025, compared with the same months in 2024. Tunguz cites Indeed data showing 5,330 FDE postings in April 2026, compared with 643 a year earlier, with Google and consulting firm Deloitte accounting for 40% of visible postings.
The money behind FDE teams is growing too. Tunguz totaled about $9.75 billion committed to forward-deployed engineering and related deployment efforts by five AI companies in 12 months: Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon, and Google Cloud. To compete for experienced FDEs, employers offer competitive compensation, often with equity.
Most forward-deployed engineer roles need experienced engineers
Unlike core software engineers, who build one product for many customers, FDEs work with one customer at a time, often on site or in person with the customer's team. Among postings that list an experience requirement, Bloomberry found that 88% ask for at least three years. Mid-level roles asking for three to five years are the most common, at 60%.
The skill mix is hard to find
A strong FDE combines the technical depth of a senior software engineer with the judgment of a consultant. In Bloomberry's analysis, 66% of postings mentioned Python, 35% mentioned AI agents, and 31% asked for experience with large language models. Cloud platforms appeared often too: AWS in 32% of postings, GCP in 22%, and Azure in 18%.
Data engineering and analytics skills help, and customer-facing skills are essential: 47% of postings explicitly require them, including the ability to uncover a customer’s pain points. Many developers have some of that expertise. Far fewer have all of it combined, and companies pay for the combination.
How much does Palantir pay forward-deployed engineers?
Palantir coined the forward-deployed engineer title and still runs one of the largest FDE teams. Tunguz estimates Palantir has about 400 to 500 FDEs, roughly 12% of its headcount.
Two public data points give a sense of Palantir FDE pay:
Visa filings. Employers sponsoring H-1B workers must file the wage they'll pay. In 2026 Labor Condition Applications compiled by Ellis, Palantir's 318 filings for forward-deployed engineers had a median wage of $145,000, ranging from about $74,000 to $204,000.
Industry estimates. Tunguz puts the median Palantir FDE figure at about $215,000.
The gap between those numbers is mostly about what they measure. Visa filings reflect the wage on the application, which may not include equity or bonuses, and they cover only sponsored employees. Broader estimates may reflect more of the total compensation package.
What affects how much companies pay FDEs?
Type of FDE role. The FDE title now covers several different jobs, and pay follows the work. Bloomberry puts builder FDEs, who ship production systems, at $140,000 to $250,000 with high equity. Sales-focused FDEs earn $120,000 to $200,000 plus commission, and internal tools roles earn $100,000 to $180,000.
Type of employer. AI and machine learning platforms, data infrastructure companies, and well-funded startups pay the most, according to Bloomberry, and many also offer equity worth 0.1% to 1.5%. Most FDE roles, 58%, are at growth-stage companies with 11 to 200 employees. Large enterprises hire fewer FDEs, since they often have their own implementation and professional services teams.
Industry. Most FDE postings don't specify an industry. Among those that do, the most common are financial services and banking (24%), government and defense (18%), healthcare and life sciences (17%), insurance (17%), and energy (13%). Bloomberry notes these are highly regulated industries where AI deployment is hard.
Seniority. Senior FDEs who can own a deployment from discovery to handoff earn the most, up to the $350,000 to $550,000 Tunguz reports at AI labs.
What does an FDE cost beyond salary?
Salary is only part of what companies pay to hire an FDE. Equity, benefits, recruiting fees, and the months it can take to fill the role all add up. For many companies, the highest cost is the value lost while an AI project waits for someone who can take it to production.
That's why many teams weigh hiring against working with a partner. A partner can embed experienced FDEs sooner, and nearshore FDEs working in US time zones can lower the base cost. Hiring builds capacity that stays with your company. The right choice depends on how many AI projects you plan to run and how quickly you need the first one in production.
How FullStack can help
Our forward-deployed engineers embed with your team, work through discovery with the people who own the problem, and take AI systems into production in your environment. Our nearshore FDEs work in US time zones, so you get senior engineering without a months-long hiring search.
What is the average base salary for a forward-deployed engineer?
Bloomberry's analysis of 1,000 FDE job postings found a median base salary of about $174,000, before equity. Seventy percent of postings also mentioned equity, so total compensation is often higher than base salary alone.
How much does Palantir pay forward-deployed engineers?
Palantir's 2026 visa filings for forward-deployed engineers show a median wage of $145,000 across 318 filings. Tomasz Tunguz estimates the median Palantir FDE figure at about $215,000, which may reflect more of the total package.
Do forward-deployed engineers get equity or commission?
Equity is common, and commission is rare. In practice, forward-deployed engineers earn equity more often than commission, while bonuses or other incentives vary by company and the role’s deployment ownership. Bloomberry found that 70% of FDE postings mention equity, only 8% of postings mention on-target earnings, and none mention a sales quota. Sales-focused roles are the exception, with commission on top of base.
How much experience do forward-deployed engineers need?
Most employers want experienced engineers. Among postings that list an experience requirement, 88% ask for at least three years, and three to five years is the most common requirement.
Is it cheaper to hire an FDE or work with a partner?
It depends on your volume of AI work. Hiring adds salary, equity, benefits, and recruiting time, while a partner can provide experienced FDEs sooner. Nearshore partners can also lower the base cost.
